' V The yong man -W on small, salary rwha ; comtepa plates can live for the same amouut that it takes to .keeii one, - justifying his opinion by 1 the experience or some frienel pr aGqu ainincei will probably find that -what ap peark to be meat for one is - often f fish There are three points to be fully considered by every young I man who would enter into "mar riage with no income other than ' a small or moderate salary . - And these points are of equal importr j auc 10 uie youngAWoman or nis . .choice. X ;A :: -k '.' v ' ; ? -v '-;.v The first requisite is good health: ? Judged from any point of vieF H is self, evident folly for a young manVor, woman of un sound physical M3ndition: to" en ter into wedlock and " this folly the ypung Oman's salary ikcsuf ficfent.to provide 1 only vthe ne cessities of metm r Doubtless there are those who will say it virould be - unreason able to expect two young people, in love, to dismiss their thoughts ;.' of conjugai happiness wjith : the observation we can't think of martying--therisk is too great we might get sick . some day. ' ' But - granting . its unreasonable ness such an attitude would be wisdom itself compared with the thoughtlessness displayed by one young couple. A case in pointy is that of a young man living in New York. His ssole income was ft salary of $18 a vweek. . He was in splendid health and lieiielt that his i future pros pects justified Tiis desire to. mar ry. The young woman was- an employee in a department store at a salary of $10 a week. In New York one cannot do much more than merely live on r$10 a week; with such an income one's savings ' must necessarily ; be, very small. In her effort to make a good impression the sav ings from her meager salary, which should have gone into some badly needed dental-work, were spent for ribbons and Jtrin- kets. V-..v.J:'v: ';' 4" Soon after they were married - - . . an attack of facial neuralgia re vealed the need of prompt den tal treatment. Exactly , - s i x months from the date of their marriage t h e young couplel found themselves owing a den tist's bill of 75 besides being confronted with the necessity of replenishing then- winter ward robe. To meet these unantici pated bul; necessary expendi- ! tures meant very frugal living, for their savings amounted to less than $20. The second point to; consider is whether the living expenses will leave a small margin: for saving. It does not seem that a x salary of $12 a week would coyer . the actual -living expenses of two people, yet one couple dem- onstrated that : it could. ' In a certain mi ddle Western v town two young people decided to marry. The young man 's salary was $11 a week: After notifying his employer ; of , his intentions his salary was increased, to $12. "With admirable wisdom the youg woman pointed but that if they had thought it possible to live on $11 the extra dollar could be saued each week. : '-kjiXrf'l The young man had a sayings , account of $75, all of which was used for purchasing j housef urn- ishinsrs. The young womanis4 savings, amounting to $50, were spent for a sensible ttrouseau ; of plain, necessary garments. 5Two f orl-whicrwa.$2::a $75 fdid y tfqt V provide v elaborate f urnishiftgsbui hlicareful purchases and some f ts - f rorn friends thiroonis were jfmade very. comfortable. ; Heati "was nqtroyiojajTrlle winter months fuel ; meant' an average ; weekly expenditure of ' - Not counting1?tie dollar 'which Ar;?Vthisleft weekly, income to ' be used f orl ciotns ana looa. iyot very mucn, to beurebutHtheW plafouhd it pbssible hot only I to Uye within.the amounic but they made it a l rule never to ; ispend their ,ntire4nwme: always something ; savedr ;f rom the $11, something to be added each week 'to the' dollar jwhich they- had j decided to ; "forget." to three cents and one red letter Saturday, night found a balance of $1.18. Between these two amounts there was enough saved to mako the weeklyf margin average 65: cents. ; ; In1 the early spring permission was obtained to raise vegetables on a vacant lot next to- where they lived. The young wife turned this opportunity to good account and enough , vegetables were raised to supply their own needs as well as those of the family from whom they rented. At the end ' of the first year their savings bank balance was $90. . Eighteen;months from the date of their marriage they Tmade a first payment of- $100 oii a house. Their income would not enable them to enjoy the luxury of theirurcbav-tth tyeoi sidered it a good investment for their sdvings. The house brought a monthly rental of $15, $12 of which went as a monthly payment to the company from which it had been purchased; The balance they added to their regular savings account. The husband 's salary has been increased three times within five vears, and today, after six years of happy, help ful companionship, they have a J home more than half paid for and every prospect for a bright future. " ,. ; ' ' ' " Such an illustration demons strates what two people may ac complish with a j small salary providing both are willing to save. Of course any one will appreciate that it is the wife who furnishes the inspiration for such a venture; she not only points the way but it is through her help and encouragement that success is made possible. The third consideration should be the young man's be the young man's' futu1re7prospects. If he has no income but his sal ary the permanency of his . posi-; tion should, by . all means be reasonably certain. Many a matrimonial venture' has en countered disastrous" conditions through the husband being tem porarily thrown out of work. . Of course it is not always pos sible to ; anticipate , things; v but there should ; at least be . more consideration givefli this point than was displyed bit one young man.' A salary of . $25 a . week seemed to him to: provide sufil cient income to warn ,nt his mar rying. The firm em ploying him was on theC verge of dissolution fact which the . stockholders kept well , gu arded 'or , reasons best known toJttiemsWvesai -Two months after Ins marriage the youngman 'foind ' himself out of a position and when he expressed to-the fir ml his opinion of what he ionsiderek t ' -very unr fair treatment ' ' " he wfcs informed t J-s - y..'Svi "4-jj - fr-" :''ti'" f'$rf ' igaiM?.ri v i in" "!" r,iiri ' i i: I i v -...: I ''' :V (CV r was of his own making. "Had you informed us of your inten tions to marry," said one of the firm, "you would have been told that we are contemplating a change which might affect your prospects." , . . v After three months of idleness, during which he and his wife were forced to live on the boun ty of relatives, the young hus band .found a position at $15 a week. A - lack of forethought had placed him under obligations which would require months ' to discharge. The wife a girl of admirable character, helped to meet the situation by findinga position"'ahd:assisting'ining off the debts which her husband's idleness had incurred. .Indian Killed ,on the Track - - Near Rochelle, 111., an Indian went to sleep on a railroad track and was killed, by tne fast express. .
